Slang Language in Movie Script “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” (2018)

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the slang meanings, characteristics, and functions of slang use in a movie script “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018). The study uses descriptive qualitative research. The data analysis obtains from the script of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018). Techniques of data analysis are watching the movie, searching movie script, reading the movie script, identifying the dialogues, analysing (the meanings, the characteristics, and the functions of slang), and drawing the conclusion from the script. From the result of the research, the writers find some slang words, according to Maurer’s theory (2023: 2) there are 56 slangs

which have four characteristics, Creativity (31), Flippant (8), Fresh (12), and Onomatopoeic (5). For the functions of slang according to Allan & Burridge (2017: 15), there are seven functions of slang, to address (8), to show intimacy (2), to reveal anger (2), to initiate relax conversation (25), to express impression (10), to humiliate (7), and to form intimate atmosphere (2). From the analysis, slang is an informal word and is usually used at certain times. It depends on the user. It can be negative or positive. The writers expect the other writer can analyse the slang language in classic and modern films, so the writer can see the use of slang between the two films.
