Abstract

This study aimed to assess the feasibility of an Artificial Intelligence-assisted companion book and to determine the improvement in students’ understanding of mathematical word problems after using the book. The research employed the Research and Development method with the Borg and Gall model (1983: 775), developed through ten stages ranging from Research and Information Collecting to Dissemination and Implementation. The subjects of the study were fifth-grade elementary school students in Paguyangan District, using a quasi-experimental design of the Nonequivalent Control Group type. The research instruments included expert validation questionnaires, student and teacher response questionnaires, and a word problem comprehension test. The validation results showed that the companion book was highly feasible, with scores of 94.7% from the material expert, 90.7% from the media expert, and 92% from the language expert. The responses from students and teachers toward the product were also very positive (91%). The results of the Paired Sample T-Test showed a significant improvement with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05). The average improvement percentage in the experimental class reached 47.99%, while the control class achieved only 28.36%. Therefore, the Artificial Intelligence-assisted Mathematics companion book was proven effective in improving students’ understanding of mathematical word problems.
